May 2016 - lots of partying

We had fun celebrating Jeff Beatty's birthday with Bubble Soccer.  What a blast!  It was hard to see and breathe in these bubbles, but an awesome and fun idea.

May is our big month with our anniversary, Alexa's birthday, Kyle's birthday, and Mother's Day.

For our (7th!) anniversary, Melissa graciously watched the kids while we went to get a couples massage.  It was Kyle's first massage and he's now converted.  Then we grabbed a Mediterranean dinner at Cous Cous and reminisced about our trip to the Middle East.  Afterwards, we got ice cream with the kids.

We celebrated Alexa's birthday by making Princess Leia cupcakes for school, letter 'A' sprinkle pancakes for breakfast, and then she wanted Dad to grill burgers for dinner.  I took her the next day to get pedicures together and her big birthday present was a leotard and gymnastics lessons.  We let her pick between horseback riding, soccer, gymnastics, or dance and she chose gymnastics.  We had her party at the Provo Splash Pad in June.

I happened to tell Alexa about my pet turtle Rocky that I had as a kid, and she thought it would be awesome to get a turtle for her birthday so she could name it Twilight Sparkle and then call it Queen Sparkle.

For Kyle's big 30th birthday he got all of the Star Wars movies, the kids got him some ninja knives and light sabers, and I rented a Harley for a day to ride around the canyon together.  He would love to own a motorcycle, but I chose a rental instead :).  It was a big, heavy Harley Touring bike with all the bells and whistles.  I was scared to leave Tad with a sitter since he can be spazzy, but he did well.

I laughed that Alexa wrapped Kyle's present in a princess bag and that Tyler's bday card for Kyle was literally a drawing of a birthday card.

Kyle brought Thai food to work so we could have his birthday lunch together and we did a surprise Los Hermanos dinner and Comedy Sportz improv night.  And, we left our keys at Comedy Sportz and they closed.  So that was fun.  Luckily, the amazing Beattys came to the rescue and took us home.  It was stressful.

One of the things we want to do more of after a prompting in General Conference is to have more one-on-one time with the kids.  We're shooting for date night Thursdays, although we've been pretty spotty so far.  I went on my first date with Tyler and asked what he wanted to do--go to the library and pick out fun books to read together, get ice cream, go to a new park or playground, jump on bouncy houses...?  His response "eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches together!"  Simple joy.  Best date ever with the sweetest boy.  We also pretended to be ninjas, rode down slides, and he took these pictures of us at the end of our date.

The kids had a great Mother's Day program at preschool.  We got to sing and dance and they made cute flowers.  As you can tell from the videos, we had no idea what we were doing on the dances.  They started the music and gave no instruction whatsoever.  And Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes in Spanish was completely different than the English version.

On Mother's Day they joined me for breakfast in bed, which was fun.

The kids graduated from preschool at the end of the month.  We debated between putting Alexa in Vineyard (the school she should go to and where she could ride the bus, but no one in the neighborhood goes to it), Cherry Hill (has a great gifted and talented program and Spanish immersion starting in 1st grade), or Noah Webster (local charter school).  After a lot of deliberation and waiting lists, we decided on Noah Webster because it's such a good school.  So we need to be better about practicing Spanish with her at home!  I hope we made the right choice--being a parent is hard.

The kids and I spent Memorial Day up in Provo Canyon hiking, exploring, and throwing rocks in the river.  Kyle was helping a friend re-roof their house.  Tyler loved the rolly polly bugs.  We brought a picnic and had a great time.  Also, it is noteworthy that I am now able to put Alexa's hair in pigtails again!  It's deja vu to when she was 2 1/2 years old and it was finally long enough for pig tails and Kyle laughed at me.  He laughed at me again but it makes my heart happy.  Her hair is slowly growing!

Alexa and Tyler are both great helpers.  Here are some pictures of them making lasagna with me, keeping Tad entertained with fun stories and ninja moves, and just being their adorable selves.

Tad shared a booth with Tyler and I at a Chinese restaurant. He grabbed a hold of Tyler's shirt and held on almost the entire meal. Tyler thought it was neat and I thought it was absolutely adorable.

Stories of the month:

After dropping off Alexa at preschool, Tyler and Kyle got into a foam sword fight.
Tyler: I will slice through your sword!
Kyle: Think again buddy, my sword is made out of diamonds! You could never break it!
Tyler: Oh yeah?! My sword is made out of... uh... WATERMELONS!

The kids were asking about nicknames and we explained that we call Alexa "Lexi" or "Lexi Bug;" Tyler is "Tyler Man;" and Tad is "Tadpole", "Taddy Boy", or "Tadamathy" (Tyler almost exclusively calls him Taddy and it's awfully cute).  Then they asked Kyle and I about our nicknames as kids and I explained that my Dad called me "Magoozle" and Kyle said his siblings called him "Kathleen Bobalu."  Kathleen Bobalu?!!  We all laughed.

stairs and a silly little girl....

I forgot to mention a few August updates in my last post, and have some more Alexa stories (as always)...First, Kyle (with the help of Uncle Paul and Todd--thank you!!) finished the stairs and they look awesome!!  He completely rebuilt them (ripped them down all the way to the drywall). Second, both Kyle and I were supposed to be in this work athletic competition in August, but I had to back out for obvious reasons.  Kyle still did the tennis and basketball tournaments and made me oh so proud.  He even got this funny little basketball trophy for taking third place.  The other tournaments that week included horseshoes, ping pong, foosball, golf, Wii dance, volleyball, and a triathlon. We went to Ikea for breakfast last Saturday (so delicious and cheap!) and bought Alexa a stuffed puppy while we were there.  She now takes it everywhere continuously saying "puppy, puppy, puppy!"  Speaking of the puppy, she even dragged it through toilet water last week.  Yes, you

December 2015 - Christmas in Indiana

Merry Christmas! We hit the road a couple of days after Granny's funeral to make the trek to Indiana for Christmas. The  kids did great the whole way.  I think it was harder on the adults!  We left at 4am and the first 8 hours were really bad due to wind and snow.  I-70 was closed unless you had chains and we were only a couple of hours in when we passed a sign saying I-80 was closed due to an avalanche warning.  Kyle screamed "Noooo!" and woke up the kids :).  We were so relieved to have Wyoming behind us!!  And we were very glad to have been driving an SUV with all-wheel-drive instead of our Toyota Matrix.  We got a new Mazda CX-9 only a week before the trip so that we can fit baby #3. We pounded out 14 hours the first day and then stopped for the night in Nebraska before continuing for another 10ish hours the next day.  The kids thought that sleeping in a hotel was amazing.  The weather on the drive home was clear and wonderful. although Tyler did poop h

July 2023 - Baby Ian

We had a blast at the Stadium of Fire Journey concert with Sara and Jason.  We also hosted a Swingle 4th of July party at our house.  Grandpa Swingle said that's the first time he's actually been able to light real fireworks in over a decade.  We decided we should make it a tradition to have them come up every year (or move here ;). Baby Ian was born and he is HUGE!  11 lb 1 oz.  Melissa's water broke at 7:30am, contractions started after that, and he was born at home with a team of paramedics with them in the outbuilding at 9am.   Fun fact: he was born on Ian Beagley's birthday and they share the same name. We spent an entire Saturday pulling down and cutting up dead trees.  We rented a wood splitter and went to town.  The kids were a big help.  We did our annual reading challenge to earn tickets to Lagoon.  Our rule is 1000 pages for every grade level finished, has to be during summer, and Alexa and Tyler both had to write a book report as well.  The kids did great!
