Sunny California

I wish our Christmas break was another month!  We left at 1am on Wednesday night / Thursday morning the week before Christmas and started the drive to Arizona.  We got there just in time for lunch and naps on Thursday. Honestly, the kids did really well all things considered, but Alexa was awake from 3-5am, and they both obviously woke up earlier than normal.  We stayed with Grandma and Grandpa Swingle until Saturday morning, and it was great to have some one-on-one time with them.  Grandma shared neat family stories with us, Grandpa loved watching TV with Alexa, and we absolutely loved the visit and time to relax in sunny AZ.  We even took the kids swimming in their neighborhood pool.  And a random 80 year-old man offered Kyle his golf cart as we were walking by so that he could take Alexa on a ride down the road.  And then gave Alexa a granola bar.

We got to California by dinner on Saturday and began our second Christmas.  The Swingle Christmas Eve tradition consists of going to Balboa Park in San Diego to see Santa and play tag.  Balboa Park is honestly one of my top 10 favorite places in the U.S.  It's beautiful there.  Santa told us that he's been coming every Christmas Eve for the last 22 years as a free service to San Diego because he used to come when he was a little boy.

We were in charge of breakfast Christmas morning, so we made Sweeny Eggnog, Crepes (Danish Pancakes), Scones, and Mountain Man breakfast casserole.  Delicious, and it made me miss the Sweeny gang.

Marmie and Grandpa Swingle gave the kids two of the coolest gifts.  First, Grandpa made (handcarved, built, etc.) a wooden grasshopper toy that hops as you pull it around the room.  I think it's so cool to have a toy built by him for the kids to play with.  Then, they recorded them reading a book.  As you turn the pages, they read each one to you.  Super neat for the kids to have throughout the year when they're far from Marmie and Grandpa.

I LOVE this nativity scene in their front yard.  Someday we will have one.

The rest of the week was spent playing games, swimming, going to the beach, going to a fun Natural History Museum in San Diego, and lots of Grandma and Grandpa time.  Kyle and Dad even tiled the kitchen back splash--doesn't it look nice?!

It was great to see Richy and Megan and play with their kids.  Cody was napping when we took this picture.

Tyler LOVED the sand.  He laughed and kicked his legs, grabbed it and covered his legs completely, and went an entire 10 minutes without trying to eat it.  After he tried it once, though, he just wanted more.

We came home to cold weather.  Kyle left his water bottle in the car thinking he would just take it to work the next morning.  It was frozen solid when he went to work.  Oh, and our patio froze as well--look closely and you can see Kyle's sledge hammer beneath the ice.

stairs and a silly little girl....

I forgot to mention a few August updates in my last post, and have some more Alexa stories (as always)...First, Kyle (with the help of Uncle Paul and Todd--thank you!!) finished the stairs and they look awesome!!  He completely rebuilt them (ripped them down all the way to the drywall). Second, both Kyle and I were supposed to be in this work athletic competition in August, but I had to back out for obvious reasons.  Kyle still did the tennis and basketball tournaments and made me oh so proud.  He even got this funny little basketball trophy for taking third place.  The other tournaments that week included horseshoes, ping pong, foosball, golf, Wii dance, volleyball, and a triathlon. We went to Ikea for breakfast last Saturday (so delicious and cheap!) and bought Alexa a stuffed puppy while we were there.  She now takes it everywhere continuously saying "puppy, puppy, puppy!"  Speaking of the puppy, she even dragged it through toilet water last week.  Yes, you

December 2015 - Christmas in Indiana

Merry Christmas! We hit the road a couple of days after Granny's funeral to make the trek to Indiana for Christmas. The  kids did great the whole way.  I think it was harder on the adults!  We left at 4am and the first 8 hours were really bad due to wind and snow.  I-70 was closed unless you had chains and we were only a couple of hours in when we passed a sign saying I-80 was closed due to an avalanche warning.  Kyle screamed "Noooo!" and woke up the kids :).  We were so relieved to have Wyoming behind us!!  And we were very glad to have been driving an SUV with all-wheel-drive instead of our Toyota Matrix.  We got a new Mazda CX-9 only a week before the trip so that we can fit baby #3. We pounded out 14 hours the first day and then stopped for the night in Nebraska before continuing for another 10ish hours the next day.  The kids thought that sleeping in a hotel was amazing.  The weather on the drive home was clear and wonderful. although Tyler did poop h

July 2023 - Baby Ian

We had a blast at the Stadium of Fire Journey concert with Sara and Jason.  We also hosted a Swingle 4th of July party at our house.  Grandpa Swingle said that's the first time he's actually been able to light real fireworks in over a decade.  We decided we should make it a tradition to have them come up every year (or move here ;). Baby Ian was born and he is HUGE!  11 lb 1 oz.  Melissa's water broke at 7:30am, contractions started after that, and he was born at home with a team of paramedics with them in the outbuilding at 9am.   Fun fact: he was born on Ian Beagley's birthday and they share the same name. We spent an entire Saturday pulling down and cutting up dead trees.  We rented a wood splitter and went to town.  The kids were a big help.  We did our annual reading challenge to earn tickets to Lagoon.  Our rule is 1000 pages for every grade level finished, has to be during summer, and Alexa and Tyler both had to write a book report as well.  The kids did great!
